故事的舞台是山口县防府市的国衙。在平安时代，这一带是“周方国”，国衙遗迹至今仍是旅游胜地。故事的主人公是生活在这里少女新子。她正上小学三年级，每天都过得开开心心的。

新子经常听爷爷跟她讲平安时代的故事，她很喜欢幻想自己变成贵族少女的样子。

班里来了一个转校生贵伊子。她以前一直生活在大城市东京，对这里的生活不太习惯。好奇心旺盛的新子很快和贵伊子成了好朋友。

新子、贵伊子以及小茂等同学一起建了个小池子，在那里养起了一条红色的金鱼。大家给它取名叫“日鹤”，那是大家最喜欢的老师的名字。每天放学，新子他们都会来看日鹤。不料日鹤突然死了，朋友们之间也因此互相猜疑，不再融洽。

新子听说有人在河里看到了一条和日鹤一模一样的金鱼，她召集朋友们一起去寻找金鱼，大家的心终于又抱成了一团……
